Sacerdotes domini

Then did priests make offering of incense and loaves of finest wheat to God:
and therefore shall they be holy to their Lord and shall not defile his most holy name. Alleluia.

Music: William Byrd c1540-1623

For the beauty of the earth,
for the beauty of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies: Christ, our God, to you we raise this our sacrifice of praise.

For the beauty of each hour
of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flower,
sun and moon and stars of light:

For the joy of ear and eye,
for the heart and mind’s delight,
for the mystic harmony
linking sense to sound and sight:

For the joy of human love,
brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth, and friends above,
for all gentle thoughts and mild:

For each perfect gift and sign
of your love so freely given,
graces human and divine,
flowers of earth and buds of heaven:

Text: Folliott Sandford Pierpoint (1835-1917)
Music: Lucerna laudoniae CH4 181 (i) David Evans 1874-1948

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and one another, in thought, word and deed. Of your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Declaration of forgiveness

Gloria patri sung by the choir

First Lesson               Acts 16  16-34

Metrical Psalm

For thou, O Lord, art high above
all things on earth that are;
above all other gods thou art
exalted very far.

Hate ill, all ye that love the Lord:
his saints’ souls keepeth he;
and from the hands of wicked men
he sets them safe and free.

For all those that be righteous
sown is a joyful light,
and gladness sown is for all those
that are in heart upright.

Ye righteous, in the Lord rejoice;
express your thankfulness,
when ye into your memory
do call his holiness.

Text: Psalm 97  9-12  The Scottish Psalter 1929
Music: St Magnus CH4 61 Melody and bass probably by Jeremiah Clarke c1673-1707

The Gospel    St John 17  20-26

The Sermon

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The Holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.

The Intercessions

Gloria in Excelsis sung by the choir

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.  Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.  Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Missa Sancti Nicolai Joseph Haydn

The Lord be with you
And also with you

Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give our thanks and praise

Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of Hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Glory be to you,
O Lord Most High.

Blessed is he that comes in the Name of the Lord:
Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Grant us your peace.

Holy Communion

During Communion the Choir sings

Ubi caritas et amor

Where charity and love are, God is there. The love of Christ
has united us. Let us rejoice and be glad in him. Let us fear
and love the living God and adore him from a sincere heart.
Where charity and love are, God is there. Amen.

Text: Paulinus of Aquileia c726 – 802
Music: Ola Gjeilo b.1978

Fight the good fight with all your might,
Christ is your strength, and Christ your right;
lay hold on life, and it shall be
your joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race, through God’s good grace,
lift up your eyes, and seek His face;
life with its path before us lies,
Christ is the way, and Christ the prize.

Cast care aside, lean on your guide;
his boundless mercy will provide:
trust, and your trusting soul shall prove,
Christ is its life, and Christ its love.

Faint not, nor fear: his arm is near;
he does not change, and you are dear;
only believe and Christ shall be
your all-in-all eternally.
