Scripture Sentences and Call to Worship
Psalm 89 (responsively)
I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David:
‘I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations.’”
Then you spoke in a vision to your faithful one, and said: “I have set the crown on one who is mighty, I have exalted one chosen from the people.
I have found my servant David; with my holy oil I have anointed him;
my hand shall always remain with him; my arm also shall strengthen him.
The enemy shall not outwit him, the wicked shall not humble him.
I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him.
My faithfulness and steadfast love shall be with him; and in my name his horn shall be exalted.
Prayer of Confession
Lord, you came to us in the fullness of time. Forgive us for not opening our eyes to your coming. It is time that we prepare for your coming. Let the earth ring with song. Let the light break forth. Let us all rejoice in the miracle of love. Let Christ come into the fullness of our time.

First Lesson St Luke 1 26-38
Music for reflection
The Linden Tree Carol
There stood in heav’n a linden tree;
But, tho’ ’twas honey laden,
All Angels cried, ‘No bloom shall be
Like that of one fair Maiden.’
Sped Gabriel on wingèd feet,
And pass’d through bolted portals
In Nazareth, a Maid to greet,
Blest o’er all other mortals.
‘Hail Mary!’ quod that Angel mild,
‘Of woman-kind the fairest:
Virgin ay shalt thou be styled,
A babe although thou bearest.’
‘So be it!’ God’s hand-maiden cried,
‘According to thy telling.’
Whereon the Angel smartly hied
Up home-ward to his dwelling.
This tiding fill’d his mates with glee:
‘Twas pass’d from one to other,
That ’twas Marie, and none but she,
And God would call her Mother.

Second Lesson St Luke 1 47-55
There is no rose
There is no rose of such virtue
As is the rose that bare Jesu;
For in this rose contained was
Heaven and earth in little space;
By that rose we may well see1
That he is God in persons three,
The angels sungen the shepherds to:2
Gloria in excelsis deo:
Leave we all this worldly mirth,3
And follow we this joyful birth;

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The Holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.
Prayers of Intercession
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.
My soul doth magnify the Lord :
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded :
the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth :
all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me :
and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him :
throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm :
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat :
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things :
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel :
as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.
