Ev’ry day will I give thanks

Ev’ry day will I give thanks unto thee:
and praise thy name for ever and evermore

Text: Psalm 145  2
Music: George Thalben-Ball 1896-1987

Spirit of truth and grace,
come to us in this place
as now in Jesus’ name God’s people gather.
Open our eyes to see
truths that will ever be,
and in communion draw us close together.

Spirit of joy and peace,
make all anxieties cease
with knowledge of the Father’s perfect caring.
Then may God’s children know
love that won’t let us go
and joy that fills each day, beyond comparing.

Spirit of life and power,
revive us in this hour
and stir our hearts to praise with true devotion.
Fill us with heavenly fire,
and every heart inspire,
that we may serve the world with your compassion.

Text: Iain D Cunningham b.1954
Music: Down Ampney CH4 608 R.Vaughan Williams 1872-1958

Without your power, living God, we are lost. We have done the things we would avoid, and what you desire, we have not done. By your purifying fire transform our lives; guide us into honesty and compassion so that, filled with your peace, our dreams and visions may be one with yours; through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord.

First Lesson               Genesis 11  1-9

Metrical Psalm

How manifold, Lord, are thy works!
in wisdom wonderful
thou ev’ry one of them hast made;
earth’s of thy riches full:

So is this great and spacious sea,
wherein things creeping are,
which number’d cannot be; and beasts
both great and small are there.

There ships go; there thou mak’st to play that leviathan great.
These all wait on thee, that thou may’st
in due time give them meat.

That which thou givest unto them
they gather for their food;
thine hand thou open’st lib’rally,
they filled are with good.

Text: Psalm 104  24-28  The Scottish Psalter 1650
Music: Bishopthorpe Jeremiah Clarke c1659-1707

Second Lesson           Acts 2  1-21

The Sermon

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The Holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.

The Intercessions

Gloria in Excelsis sung by the choir

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.  Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.  Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Messe Solennelle Louis Vierne

The Lord be with you
And also with you

Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give our thanks and praise

Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of Hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Glory be to you,
O Lord Most High.

Blessed is he that comes in the Name of the Lord:
Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Grant us your peace.

Holy Communion

During Communion the Choir sings

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world, Grant us your peace.

Music: Louis Vierne 1870-1937

Great and deep the Spirit’s purpose,
hidden now in mystery;
nature bursts with joyful promise,
ripe with what is yet to be.
In a wealth of rich invention,
still God’s work of art unfolds;
barely have we seen, and faintly,
what God’s great salvation holds.

Great and deep the Spirit’s purpose,
making Jesus seen and heard.
Every age of God’s creation
grasps new meaning from the Word.
Show us, Holy Spirit, show us
your new work begun today;
eyes and ears and hearts are open,
teach us what to do and say.

Great and deep the Spirit’s purpose,
all God’s children brought to birth;
Freed from hunger, fear and evil
every corner of the earth;
and a million, million voices
speak with joy the Saviour’s name;
every face reflects his image,
never any two the same.

Great and deep the Spirit’s purpose,
nothing shall be left to chance;
all that lives will be united
in the everlasting dance;
all fulfilled and all perfected,
each uniquely loved and known;
Christ in glory unimagined
once for all receives his own.
