Scripture Sentences and Call to Worship

Spirit divine, attend our prayers,
and make this house your home;
descend with all your gracious powers;
Come now, great Spirit, come!

Come as the fire; and purge our hearts
like sacrificial flame;
let our whole life an offering be
to our Redeemer’s name.

Come as the dove; and spread your wings,
the wings of peaceful love;
and let your Church on earth become
blest as the Church above.

Come as the wind, with rushing sound
and Pentecostal grace,
that all of woman born may see
the glory of your face.

Spirit divine, attend our prayers;
and make this world your home;
descend with all your gracious powers;
come now, great Spirit, come!

Text: Andrew Reed 1787-1862
Music: Martyrs CH4 583 Scottish Psalter 1615

Eternal God, our Creator and Redeemer, we have sinned against you and one another, in thought, word and deed. Of your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Declaration of forgiveness

Gloria patri sung by the choir (Tone ii)

First Lesson  Jeremiah 17 5-10

Metrical Psalm

How blest are those who do not stray,
led by the wicked’s talk;
who will not with the sinful stand,
nor sit where scoffers mock.

The teaching of the Lord their God
they follow with delight,
and meditate upon his word
with gladness day and night.

They flourish like well-watered trees
set by a riverside,
whose fruit matures, whose leaves remain
they prosper and abide.

The wicked, like the straw and chaff
by wind blown far away,
can have no place among the just
nor stand on judgement day.

The Lord will guard the righteous well,
he knows the way they take;
but doomed to perish is the way
the wicked undertake.

Text: Charles Robertson b.1940 (Psalm 1)
Music: St Botolph Gordan A Slater 1896-1979

The Gospel    St Luke 6  17-26

The Sermon

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The Holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.

The Intercessions

Gloria in Excelsis sung by the choir

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.  Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.  Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Mass in E flat Josef Gabriel Rheinberger

The Lord be with you
And also with you

Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give our thanks and praise

Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of Hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Glory be to you,
O Lord Most High.

Blessed is he that comes in the Name of the Lord:
Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Grant us your peace.

Holy Communion

During Communion the Choir sings

Tantum ergo sacramentum

Therefore we before him bending,
This great sacrament revere:
Types and shadows have their ending,
For the newer rite is here;
Faith, our outward sense befriending,
Makes the inward vision clear.

Glory let us give and blessing
To the Father and the Son,
Honour, might and praise addressing,
While eternal ages run;
Ever too his love confessing,
Who, from both, with both is one.

Text: St Thomas Aquinas 1225-1274
Music: Maurice Duruflé 1902-1986

We sing a love that sets all people free,
that blows like wind, that burns like scorching flame,
enfolds the earth, springs up like water clear.
Come, living love, live in our hearts today.

We sing a love that seeks another’s good,
that longs to serve and not to count the cost,
a love that, yielding, finds itself made new.
Come, caring love, live in our hearts today.

We sing a love, unflinching, unafraid
to be itself, despite another’s wrath,
a love that stands alone and undismayed.
Come, strength’ning love, live in our hearts today.

We sing a love that, wand’ring, will not rest
until it finds its way, its home, its source,
through joy and sadness pressing on refreshed.
Come, pilgrim love, live in our hearts today.

We sing the Holy Spirit, full of love,
who seeks out scars of ancient bitterness
brings to our wounds the healing grace of Christ;
come, radiant love, live in our hearts today.
