Scripture Sentences and Call to Worship

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;

he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

Unison Prayer of Confession

Loving God, we read of your mighty acts among
your people, and we rejoice in your power
displayed in Jesus, the risen One.
We confess our faithlessness and lack of trust.
We have lived as though your power belonged to the past; we have not trusted Jesus to work miracles of healing and forgiveness in us. Raise us out of the captivity of guilt into the freedom and energy of forgiven people. Amen.

Declaration of Pardon

First Lesson                     1 John 3: 16-24

Music for reflection

The Lord is my shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd; therefore can I lack nothing.
He doth lead me where the green pastures grow
by the quiet waters of comfort.

He restoreth my soul
and doth lead me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Yes, will I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for Thou art my guide:
and Thy rod and Ty staff they shall comfort me.

Text: Psalm 23
Music: Antonin Dvořák 1841-1904

Second Lesson                 John 10: 11-18

Ecce vicit Leo

Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah,
the root of David,
hath prevailed to open the book
and to loose the seven seals thereof.

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain
to receive power,
and godliness,
and wisdom,
and strength,
and honour,
and glory,
and blessing.

Text: Revelation 5  5,12
Music: Peter Philips 1561-1628

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The Holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting.

Prayers of Intercession

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

The Song of Simeon

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace :
according to thy word.

For mine eyes have seen :
thy salvation;

Which thou hast prepared :
before the face of all people;

To be a light to lighten the Gentiles :
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.
